Jump to first subcategory?

Hi all,

 

Has anyone ever modded the categories so that clicking the top level category (which contains no products, only subcategories) will jump you right into the first subcategory under it (which contains products)?

 

To clarify, I have a top category called boys names, and subcategories which are all letters of the alphabet, to make it easier to find your name. But I don't want the visitor to have to click 'boys names', then show all the subcategory images in the body. I'd rather have it display all the 'A' names first (the first subcategory) and let the visitor use the left hand subcategory display to navigate onward. So they see product right away.

 

Any suggestions are appreciated.
