Hi.

I am going to contract hosting for an osCommerce shop, and I have no idea about how many bandwith I need for it.

I would be grateful if the people which has a working shop could tell me how many bandwith use monthly.

Many thanks,

Marta.

My site has used 100 megs this month, I think I have 25 Gigs of bandwidth available. I don't think I will run out.

There is no clear answer for this since it depends on how large your files are and how busy the site is. For most new shops though, I would guess the required bandwidth is well under 1 GB. Since most plans include much more than that, it is not usually a concern for new shops. I think if you went with a plan that has 2-5 GB (or more) of bandwidth, you shouldn't have a problem at all.

One of the stores I did started in february and I use about 2 gigs a month. I get anywhere from 50-100 visitors a day. My plan has 120 gb (only 5.95)

you wont have to worry on bandwidth. I would go with the lowest plan available that fits your other needs with a reliable webhost. The webhost will defintly let you know right away if your bandwidth is exceeded and ask you to upgrade. For the first year of any shop you probly wont exceed 5 gig so why pay for 50 when you wont use it all. Wait till you need it and worry about other things you host provides that effects your website greatly like server uptime and good technical support.

we have about 50-100 people on the site at 1 time. i had to switched to dedicated server because between my site and 1 other large store that ran on the server it was constantly maxxing out the cpu and causing crashes and other probs. nw i run on my own dedicated box and its running flawlessly. i had to do some tweaking to improve page query counts and other stuff to take less strain off the server during busy times.

Let me try to translate the explanation about the monthly trafic, that I listen of my web hoster.

If your site had 1000 views in a month and each visitor see, in an average, 100Kb, so you have: 1000 views x 100Kb = 100Mb

If you use FTP to update your site, in average, 10000KB (10Mb)

and If you send and receive e-mails, in average, 20000Kb (20Mb)

So you have (100Mb Trafic + 10Mb FTP + 20Mb E-mails) 130Mb of Total Trafic in a month

So I believe that a 5Gb of monthly trafic and 500Mb in disk space is enough!!!!
