Yes you need a company to take your payments and then send the money to your bank account. One processor without startup fees is www.paypal.com

I would really avoid PayPal to be honest - I've never heard a good word said about them on here (or elsewhere). Also, yes they are cheap and quick to set up - but their transaction fees (2.9% + 0.30 USD!!!) are incredibly high.

You need an online merchant account and a payment gateway. Authorize.net is an excellent one, set up fees are usually $50-$100. Running costs, and transaction fees, once set up are very low.

Well, you won't be able to say that again, because it's my belief that they are ideal for small start-ups.

Their percentage rates per transaction are higher than some other companies, but this has to be offset against:

1. ease of use

2. no start up fee

3. no monthly ongoing account fee

4. whilst I always recommend ssl on the website it's not required when using Pay Pal, as it would be if you were using Authorize Net.

Comparing with other companies and their costs Pay Pal work out cheaper unless your site reaches the point where you're taking in excess of $20,000 a year. Above that point then 'yes' you'd want a different payment processor, like Authorize Net.
