carolinagirl52 Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 I have been reading and studying for a while now. I can see from some of the hosts I have looked at that the sql database is limited to 50 -100 or unlimited. I am really confused on what to do. I choose a host first, right, then get OS commerce and apache? I have so many products and as I understand it, one sql is one set of products? Do you host with oscommerce, here or are you suppose to find another host? I have also found many different control panels, from cpanel, vdeck to H something or ruther. Talk about confusing! I dont understand the difference is using a host with site builder as opposed to using os commerce. Could someone please be kind enough to help me through all this? Thanks
Andrew Yuen Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 Hi Deb, osCommerce does not host sites, just provides the front and backend of a store. 1 database is used for multiple products. First you obtain a domain name, then a host that supports PHP and mysql, then install osCommerce. If you have additional questions send me a PM. Andrew Yuen osCommerce, Community Team
bows2babydolls Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 Hi there As a fellow blond who was once in the same position as you i would like to help. Choose your host which supports php and mysql as andy has said. i found the site builders that the hosts provide you with to be useless for ecommerce websites. Oscommerce to me meant i wouldnt have to spend ages designing my site and fiddling about with php and SQL and god knows what to make an ecommerce website. SQL is just the name of a query language used on databases. You will generally only need one database to store all of your product information in (correct me if i am wrong someone). With regards to control panels i used the straight forward Cpanel. Then install oscommerce and you can begin changing the look of your site and adding the products :) I would reccomend installing easy populate (lookin the contributions section) if you are going to be uploading a lot of products, i would still be adding products in two years time without it :D

Thanks Hope this won't cause even more confusion but there are two major types of servers available: Linux and Windows. You should choose a host that uses Linux. Oscommerce will work on either but you will have fewer problems on Linux. You don't have a say in the control panel you will be using, once you pick your host. The host installs the control panel and they only have one choice, unless they offer both Linux and Windows servers but that option is eliminated by my first point. Site Builder, or any other kind of program used to create a site, is useless when it comes to oscommerce. It is not compatible and will not work so it really shouldn't be a consideration. If you use your hosts control panel to install oscommerce, you should then overwrite that installation with the latest version of oscommerce downloadable from the above menu. Very few, if any, hosts have the latest oscommerce package in their install options.
