JemCraft
I have been checking out my error log and these 2 errors appear regularly: [Fri Sep 1 14:44:43 2006] [error] [client 62.252.128.25] File does not exist: /usr/home/jemcscom/public_html/favicon.ico and [Fri Sep 1 13:51:11 2006] [error] [client 65.54.188.105] File does not exist: /usr/home/jemcscom/public_html/robots.txt Can someone point me in the right direction of stopping them? Thanks Jemma
jasonabc
These are requets made by search engine spiders when they come to your site. Google robots.txt - there are plenty of tutorials and advice on what this file is and does. A favicon is a the little icon that appears in your bookmarks and in your address bar at the beginning. These don't usually show in IE - bu Safari and Firefox will display them nicely. They are unimportant and these error messages can be ignored. Jack_mcs
The favicon is just an image used with IE. You can generate one (search google for favicon) and place it on your site to elimiate the problem. The robots problem is more serious. You should have a robots file in your root. Try viewing this page and you will see it doesn't exist. Search the forums for robots.txt and you will find post that show examples or there are many examples on the web. The above link indicates another problem with your site. Each site should have their own 404 page not found file. When a visitor tries to go to a page of your site that doesn't exist, as above, the will be redirected as above. The page they are sent to is not related to your site and acts as an advertisement for your host. By having your own 404 page, they will be redirected to it instead. You should have a link to your site on it and a link to your sitemap, if you have one, on it too. That way any visitors that should end up on your site, will end up there.
