Newbie...price shows zero? What does contributions mean?

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge...I will probably end up hiring someone to do the store for me or take a crash course of some kind.

1...I am trying to figure out why my prices are showing up as zero...I saw a previous post with the same question, and one solution was to clear the cache...what exactly does that mean and how do you go about doing it? I think the problem arose when I changed my default currency to Canadian dollars and I'm sure I have not edited it correctly (Is there somewhere that explains how to edit that...ie.# of decimals, symbol to left, etc...)

2...I keep reading about contributions and am a little confused as to what that means. I know what the word means on its own, but is there a different meaning on these boards...it just seems to be in a different context.

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

Hi John.

(1) First, if you go to your ADMIN tool, which is probably located at http://www.yourwebsite.com/catalog/admin, or something like that, you log into that, and under "localization", select "currencies". There, click "update currencies" whenever you can, and then highlight your default currency (Canadian dollars). There, you may select "edit" and play around with the decimals.

(2) Contributions are modules you install on your OSC, and are the lifeline of OSC (in my opinion). They allow you to do things such as use paypal, have a UPS shipping module, to really just about anything. Look at my signature below for an example .... I can deem a customer tax exempt; customers can put items on a wishlist and come back later. I have category banners and rollover images to add a visual effect, I have Xsell which makes it so when a customer selects to browse a product, they see what other product(s) it's often purchased with, turning them on to other things. There are 1,000's of these kinds of things, which is why it's important to keep in touch with this board. You can search the contributions above by clicking "Community", then "Contributions", although the best way to learn about contributions is right here, or on the main page of the support forums, in the OSC Contributions / Contributions help section. They're fun to install, but always back up your files (catalog folder) and your database (via your cpanel) before installing them, as sometimes they're not always perfect or conflict with your OSC. Always backup before installing any contribution. But if you plan on going full boat OSC, I'm sure you'll have a host of contributions you'll want to (and need to) install.

Good luck.
