steward Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I am as lost as a goose's egg and get more so the more I read the last 8 days about shopping carts, what I am wanting to ask is, can I use the osCommerce Cart as a stand alone site? #1. I would like to have so I could move it is I have to, I have had personal sites and a few good and a few bad hosts, what I find is I better know my store and how to configure it if I am going to get it off the ground, I purchased sunshop sometime back which the year of support is now gone, I never got the shop up and running and they sold out once and changed servers 3 times in the 2 years I was there, down time was more like 25% , as I said, a personal genealogy site is what I had hosted with hopes in the future of a store, anyway that went south, the sunshop is way to complicated for me to install without help, I looked at godaddy's ecommerce and it was just a tad out of my price range and I was so lost before I got away from their site just trying to navigate all around all the spam etc. that I thought of just giving up on the store thing all together, their site is just too difficult for a person as myself to understand let alone build a website from, I am 64 and a bit dense anyway, so that may have been the problem. I will take payments on the site secured by a shared SSl cert. from my host, then I have to call in the sale each time I make a sale and I like that because I would delete the credit card info after it was approved. Next, I would like to use one language, english and ship only in the USA usps with a flat shipping price, a nice looking store but not too much to distract from the items, a FAQ section, I can't think of anything else at the moment. Any suggestions would never be forgotten and appreciated more than you know. Main question is: Will the osCommerce shopping cart work as my website with no other html stuff? Thank you kindly for listening. Marvin Steward

It's pretty straightforward to get OSC up and running. This is a good place to start: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=162231 You made a good choice with your solution - companies that provide e-commerce solutions charge you to use their software/service. If you stop paying - they pull the plug. The beauty of OSC is it belongs to you. It's sits on your webserver and you can do whatever you like with it. You can add as many pages as you like by installing something like this: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1026 OSC's Admin Tool is superb - once you have installed it (following the guide above) you can happily run your store/website without ever writing a single piece of code.
