Craft Fairy
Hi there i wonder if anyone could take my hand and gide me through some of this! I have at the moment a website i have put together using Yahoo Page Builder (www.craftfairies.com) My hosting is all done through yahoo and includes my domain name and email addresses, could i have an oscommerce site through yahoo? I am a novice at this, i come from a graphic design background and have only touched upon HTML a handful of times. I am not 100% certain how osCommerce works and don't really know where to start as i dont want to start if i can't do what i want to do in it, how flexible is it design wise as i need a gallery and could also do with being able to include PDF documnets, is this possible I am sorry if i annoy people by asking questions that i may be able to answer by mooching about the fourums but i need it clear in my mind. my ultimate question is: is this suitable for a novice? I am keen an willing to learn and have a play but will i be able to do the basics? Thanks for your time Lisa x
hetster
its hard if your a novice but its great for learning about the inner workings of php and sql etc. it can also be easy if your happy with the stock oscommerce homepage. i recommend getting oscommerce and then sign up to somewhere like http://www.110mb.com/ takes 5 mins to sign up..basicaly a name and password and an email. then ftp oscommerce to it free hosting and has everything you need for oscommerce and its free install oscommerce on there and then have a play around..youve nothing to lose at all except a bit of free time. but ive only been using oscommewrce for a week and took my own advice lol. heres mine after a week of playing. http://the-pc-shop.110mb.com/catalog/ p.s. if you can use html editors like dreamweaver or frontpage etc then i'd recommend the STS template system from the contribution section on here. it allows you to define the homepage useing html instead of pure php and css

Guest
You could also try using something like easyphp or xampp and set up a server on your computer. Then when ready upload it to the internet. I find testing and building on the desktop much easier. Drag and drop if much faster than FTP when (not if) you make a mistake and have to start over. Make sure you start with the most recent copy of osC from the downloads section.
