KPGroup Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Hello, I have been testing my store on a commercial server. I needed to have open port 3000 and 30000 for the Canada Post contribution. Apparently this is only possible if I have a virtual dedicated or dedicated server at this hosting provider. Is this the general practice? Does everybody here use a dedicated (or virtual) server? Thanks in advance. K.
Jack_mcs Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Those ports can be opened on shared servers too. Guest Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Ask them again to open the port, if they won't find a new host.
KPGroup Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 THanks for the quick replies. I'll try again :)
Terra Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 A virtual dedicated server is basically a shared server where each site has its own "virtual dedicated" space ... which is a totally different thing to a real dedicated server where you have your own server and nobody else uses it. Don't let your hosting company confuse you. all the best, Terra My code for combining PayPal IPN with ** QTPro 4.25 ** osC Affiliate ** CCGV(trad) and how to solve the invoice already paid error General info: Allow customer to delete order comment ** FTP Programs & Text Editors ** Amending order email **
KPGroup Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 As a follow up question, I'd like to know what are the typical requirements for running OSC with most popular contributions (for shipping, payment,...). I know about the pHp and MySQL requirements. I also know about the htaccess with Apache. I also found out about some open port (3000 and 30000 in this specific case). What else is required? What should I look for when shopping for a host? List so far: - PHP supported - MySQL DB's - Apache server for htaccess - open port 3000 and 30000 Thanks in advance!
Guest Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 You might need another port open for your payment processor depending on who you use. Also an SSL cert, email, etc. Most Linux hosting companies do meet all your requirements for the server and such. Just have to find one that will work WITH you to get the site up and running such as port 30000. I don't think you need 3000 open for CP.

Thanks again :D GD library or Imagemagick running in the PHP install is good for thumbnail contributions cURL is also used a lot by payment modules (another area of the php install) You can check if you have those installed with your server_info in tools in your administration area. I would also find a host who offers Cpanel accounts (or some kind of administration for your server that allows you to run cron jobs and create backups). A host that actually backs up each account each day is another bonus. Steve My Toolbox: Crimson Editor, Adobe Photoshop CS2.0, Expression Web, Macromedia Suite 8.0, Cinema 4D, Nvu.
