Paypal TIMEOUT

hi all!

75% of my customers are emailing me to tell me they experience a PAYPAL TIMEOUT when they try to pay for their goods on my shopping cart.

It seems to be random, and happen at the same spot all the time: when they reach the Paypal page to pay with their account (they try to login and it times out).

I have installed PAYPAL IPN on my shopping cart. I thought the problem might be related to the original Paypal payment contribution. Since Paypal IPN, at least I can now see how many customers are actually trying to purchase something but are stuck at the Paypal gate... and the numbers scare me!

So far, I check my orders many times a day and when I see a Paypal IPN pending notification, I go into my Paypal account and manually invoice the customer. Sometimes they will answer back to the request and pay. But nothing tells me that the email the customer entered during his cart registration is the same as his Paypal one, so it doesn't always work...

I need to find a solution to this Paypal TIMEOUT problem. It is extremely irritating to me, and of course to my customers.

I contacted PAYPAL and they emailed me some mumbo jumbo about slow connections from customers creating this problem... But it cannot be that since SO MANY of my customers are experienceing that problem.

What could cause this problem?

How does the architecture of the payment work?

Does Paypal send a request to my server?

Could it be that request that timesout?

Maybe my server blocks something?

Maybe I need to make sure about a certain setting?

Could it be because I don't have a secure SSL system installed on my server and some browsers don't like that?

Could it be a setting I have done wrong in OsCommerce settings?

as a reference, here's my cart: www.ilovebianca.com .

thank you in advance for your time and efforts...

Assuming you are using IPN contrib by osc team ( or might be by devosc ):

1)Is your server very slow??

2)In IPN paypal module client is transfered to paypal site where he completes his payment and then is returned to your success page.If this is not happening then probably it has got to do with some session issues at paypal. Please check if sessions that are created at paypal cabn there duration be set thru paypal profile(not sure on this). But for sure its a session related problem.

3)The best way I suggest is to ask your hosting company for a site on the same server that interacts wuth paypal and is doing fine.Generally problem is at the server environment level (curl, ssl,Firewall etc)

Provide more details if this does not serves your purpose.

Thanks satish for the comments.

I use IPN PAYPAL contrib by OSC TEAM.

I don't know if the following problem is related, but I just got an email from a user that says he also gets an error when he tried to pay using his credit card (with no Paypal account) and the error occured when he tried to re-enter the confirmation characters (I assume the letters/characters that Paypal shows you to re-enter manually).

How fast does a server need to be to not create TIMEOUTS with paypal? I mean, my sites are working fine on that server. And everytime I personally tried a transaction on my shoppnig cart, it went through fine. Granted I tried only 3 times, still, most of my customers don't even get past 1 try!

I am totally puzzled.

Is there anything I can do without having to actually move my shopping cart to another server? Certainly there is something specific causing this Paypal Timeout... ! But what? :-(

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all.

I thought I would post a quick follow-up on this problem.

It seems the PAYPAL TIMEOUT problem was caused by the fact that my shopping cart was inside a frame. Paypal does not allow for their pages to be displayed in frames, and since my shopping cart was in a frame, then the Paypal procedure also happened within a frame. They seem to have a frame detection somewhere during the paying procedures, and this cause the TIMEOUT.

I have redesigned the store with no frames, and since then I have received no Paypal timeout complaint from my customers.

Hopefully, this topic will benefit another user with similar problem in the future.

Thanks,
