Hi all,

I have just found this site and I like the oscommerce template and layout.

This may have been asked before but I have trawled through the forum and cannot find the information that I need.....so sorry if asking again a problem that has been answered before.

I have an operating ecommerce web site and wish to change this to oscommerce. My hosting company are ok and I do not wish to change from them.

How can I seamlessly delete my old files and transfer the new files and mysql database to the new oscommerce onto my host company. I have spent years putting data into the excisting site and cannot afford to lose the data and hundreds of images which have been upload so far.

Any help appreciated.

I'm pretty sure if your current ecommerce site is not an oscommerce site, it will probably take a little bit more time to setup your new store.

Considerations:

1. Take into consideration your database structure. Your current site don't have the same structure like that of oscommrece.

2.The Layout that you would want on your new oscommerce site. If you will use the default oscommerce layout you're site will be up and running in no time.

To start off,

1. don't delete your current site until your new osc site is up and running.

2. On your hosting, create a subdomain, like beta.yourdomain.com or staging.yourdomain.com

3. Create a new database for your oscommerce site. I'm sure your hosting service allows your to have more than 1 database, mine allows 50 database on one account.

4. Upload your oscommerce files on your beta.yourdomain.com and do your development and testing there. Once it is up and running create a Splash page informing your clients / visitors that you have a beta site, and include a text like, To use our beta site please click here. and To enter to our current site, please click here.

I think that's about it.

Hope I was able to help. If you have anymore question, just post it here. :)

many thanks Kenshin for your advice.

Yes my host gives me two databases......but if I install the second oscommerce database to my site, can I import/transfer the data that is in my current database or do I have to enter all the information again?

My current site is at http://www.a2zstamps.co.uk and has many cat/products already listed and I would like to use the information aleady listed if that is possible.

You will have to set up a blank database and import into it the default osCommerce tables, which is in the file catalog/install/oscommerce.sql

Once you have done that you will have to look at the structure of your existing database and, where possible, match up tables in your old database with the osCommerce one. Is it possible? Yes, but only if you have the experience to be able to do it.

I understand your reluctance to lose old data but my advice is to bite the bullet and start off with a new osCommerce website - advising your old customers that they will need to register again on the new website.

Install the new osCommerce website in a folder called something like 'shop' or 'store', so that it will be available at http://www.yourdomain.com/store or /shop - which will allow your existing website to continue to run while you get the osCommerce website working and looking how you want it to look.

Once you are ready for your osCommerce website to go live then download the osCommerce folders/files to your computer, download a copy of the old website to your computer, then delete the old site, and upload the osCommerce folders/files to the root of your domain - so that it is available at http://www.yourdomain.com. You'll need to make some edits to the two osCommerce configure.php files after moving it to the root of your domain.

Due to space restrictions I have decided to run the os folders from my computer. I have an external 160gb hard disk and would like to setup, populate and design my new store from this disk.

What would I need to do this and where can I get the software from?

Would there be any problems when setup complete in transfering the store to my host company?

Many thanks

Stephen
