Thanks, Ok, some simple tips to start with. RTM. This is short for Read The Manual, or RTFM (I will let you interprete that one.. ;) You should have downloaded the codumentation for osCommerce when you began setting it up, this comes in really handy. However, in the typical GUY spirit (we don't need directions..., and even more rarely do we read instructions...) Here's some quick help on where to find the answers.. 1. If you have a merchant account, thats great, look in http://yoursite.com/catalog/admin for payment options and enable the module that is best for you. Every online storefront however needs to have a gateway. A typical gateway would be authorize.net, or others. If you already have a gateway provided by your card processor (this often costs extra), you should check out the contrib section for osCommerce, the link is http://www.oscommerce/community/contributions and search the name of your gateway provider. If there doesnt seem to be one simmilar, post the name of your processor or gateway here and someone will be more then happy to give you ideas, if they have any. Ussually you may have to hit one of the 'rent a coder' websites to assist you with this aspect if you are unable to modify the payment modules to work for you. 2. Your SALES will show in the admin section (again, http://yoursite.com/catalog/admin) osCommerce does not handle payments, thats up to your processor, oscommerce as a PROGRAM sends your buyer to your processor, your processor sends the user back to oscommerce. See your processor for information about getting paid (unless your talking about setting up the payment module). 3. Interface colours? Depends on what you mean by interface. You should be more specific. Your browser interface depends on which browser your using, indeed, even if your browser is capable of that. If you refer to the webpage you've installed on your server (oscommerce scripts) you can modify most colours by editing the stylesheet.css file in your /catalog/ directory. This will allow not only colour but font type, size and other changes. (as well as the background colour, table colours etc) 4. As a program oscommerce is not 'located' in any one spot. Its up to you to change the default settings for your local. This can be fairly simple in the /catalog/admin/ section on your website. Delete the Florida and create a setting for your own State or Province. Note, if you do business in more then one State or Province you should have one setup for each as you may need to remit in each locality. For example if you 2 stores, one in Florida and Texas, you should charge tax to customers purchasing in both states, if you only work from your home and have the 'one' location, then you only need to charge the tax for the single state (don't forget any federal sales, or VAT/GST/HST taxes like we have in Canada) 5. When your comfortable enough with oscommerce you can begin making modifications to make your store more unique. Again, this is in the contributions area. (always backup from your root directory before making any modifications, and never modify a production system, run a beta.yoursite.com for this and then copy over to the new directory) Hope this helps, and welcome to oscommerce! boozhound
Ok, some simple tips to start with. RTM. This is short for Read The Manual, or RTFM (I will let you interprete that one.. ;) ok. some things are not real obvious on the interface, i didnt notice a manual anywhere easily accessable. i'll go back and look for it... You should have downloaded the codumentation for osCommerce when you began setting it up, this comes in really handy. However, in the typical GUY spirit (we don't need directions..., and even more rarely do we read instructions...) Here's some quick help on where to find the answers.. not sure what this is or where its at? again, i just installed oscommerce via my webhost. theres alot of info/files, so not really sure where this stuff is located or how to get it.? i dont really see anything obvious on where to get manuals or documentation on the admin side or anything. 1. If you have a merchant account, thats great, look in http://yoursite.com/catalog/admin for payment options and enable the module that is best for you. If you already have a gateway provided by your card processor (this often costs extra), you should check out the contrib section for osCommerce, the link is http://www.oscommerce/community/contributions and search the name of your gateway provider. i looked there, i cant seem to make sense of what im supposed to be looking for and what i do with this info... If there doesnt seem to be one simmilar, post the name of your processor or gateway here and someone will be more then happy to give you ideas, if they have any. Ussually you may have to hit one of the 'rent a coder' websites to assist you with this aspect if you are unable to modify the payment modules to work for you. i have signed up with e-onlinedata.com which the gateway is authorize.net. i have a document sheet with some info on there. do i edit that data under the admin site>modules>payment>authorize.net>edit? if so, do i just put in my login info and TM key i got from my merchant account setup and would that active the gateway? (is TM Key the same thing as MID #)? Theres another option under it for credit cards. i was under the assumption that authorize.net takes care of that, is this module something separate? 2. (always backup from your root directory before making any modifications, and never modify a production system, run a beta.yoursite.com for this and then copy over to the new directory) i've customized it quite a bit, just refining now. tkeats
Ouch, your reply was hard to read as you quoted your comments as my own... Now... No, do not charge someone in Utah, Texas taxes, unless Utah or Texas requires you to. Not to burst a bubble, but you may might want to chagne the directory you access the storefront from. /catalog/ is generally sufficient unless your running multiple storefronts under the same domain.. You can find "codumentation" at http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/documentation, or http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads (The links at the very bottom of the 2nd link is what I refered to earlier. Because you are with a company that utilizes authorize.net, the process is simplified. If you only want to accept through authorize.net then simply ignore the others, if you want to offer paypal etc enable those also. TM, MID? These are terms I am not familiar with, (I do not have a merchant account myself so don't be surprised). I would try it and run a test transaction. If it works, then it was the same, if not.. try googling or running a broader spectrum search on these forums for assistance. (maybe the authorize.net payment module's support thread .. ) . Otherwise contact your processor for the information, tho it should be available online with a simple search In the contributions area you would search 'authorize.net' or 'credit card', or just browse after selecting the 'payment' option... It should be fairly evident. A word of caution here, anything in the contrib section that you download should be unzipped or untared in its own subdirectory (ie: /my/directory/new_modules/) before applying it to your productive system so you can get the directory tree right I've gotten a fair share of code where the directories where misnammed (/catalog/Includes is NOT the same as /catalog/includes and the module will not be found). The only reason I pointed you to the contrib section was in case you didnt have authorize.net as your gateway. If you had "abc processing", or "Bank of Future Rich People", you could have searched for it there. ;) Good Luck. boozhound
Thanks, TM, is the reference oscommerce uses on the authorize.net module that stands for Transaction Key. MID means Merchant ID. im not sure if this is the same thing or not? i dont have a TM, just the MID... i guess i could put the MID into the TM field and see what happens. basically this is the info im assuming i need to input to get my merchant account connected with the authorize.net module: Enable Authorize.net Module Do you want to accept Authorize.net payments? True False Login Username The login username used for the Authorize.net service Transaction Key Transaction Key used for encrypting TP data Transaction Mode Transaction mode used for processing orders Test Production Transaction Method Transaction method used for processing orders Credit Card eCheck Customer Notifications Should Authorize.Net e-mail a receipt to the customer? True False Payment Zone If a zone is selected, only enable this payment method for that zone. Set Order Status Set the status of orders made with this payment module to this value Sort order of display. Sort order of display. Lowest is displayed first. as far as the directory change. when i installed oscommerce, the directory automatically created public_html/oscommerce/catalog/ directory. i guess i could change oscommerce to something else...? tkeats
The directory change should be fairly simple, you will need to edit your configure.php files to change the directory to something a bit more professional. How you have it now is fine for testing/beta purposes, but I imagine when you go 'live' you will want to look professional. Can you imagine The Gap, Target, Walmart or IBM, or any other company sending you to a domain that has /osCommerce/ in the url ? No, and I imagine most of them wouldnt have /catalog/ either (tho /catalog/ does allow you some flexibility to have /support/ and /forums/ and stuff under the TLD (yoursite.com) As for authorize.net all you need to do is enable it and edit the changes to what you need. If something seems broke, test your way through it and see what changes result. Again, Good Luck!
