Thumbnail resolution

My basic photos are all 640px by 480px and I have configured the thumbnail to render at 150/120. Problem: The thumbnails' resolution is terrible. Is there a way to control thumbnail resolution? I've looked on the www and in here, but to no avail. Can someone help pls? - .... .- -. -.- ...
