tedh Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 can someone walk me through the basics of getting started with oscommerce? I do not know much about setting up a storefront other then the basic ebay store which i already use. I do not have much computer knowledge other then the basics of the microsoft office products... things i need to know, are how long does it take to set up the storefront. How easy is it to maintain. And how easy is it to create new items for the store... I would be possibly loading 20-30 thousand items into my store...

However, i think that info is a little past the basics that i need to know.. I guess you could say i am looking for a more simple answer.
Andrew Yuen Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Loading 20-30 thousand items depending on how complicated the item descriptions are and how you have the data on your computer could take many many years. Adding 20 or 30 products manually is easy to do but adding 20-30 thousand would take years and tons of time and would be almost impossible to do by yourself. If you have all the data in excel I suggest using easypopulate which would speed things up greatly. Products that need options is what takes the longest time. It has taken me months to upload 3,000 products to my store many of which contain options. Andrew Yuen osCommerce, Community Team

If by optionms you mean color size etc, then no, i have no products that would have these options.. all of my products are unique.... So how much time would it take to set up the actual storefront, designing it, getting features on it, getting it hosted etc, before any products are added?
jasonabc Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Well that depends on your experience dude. A good web programmer with good knowledge of OSC could have everything on your list done in 2 or 3 days. It takes people with less knowledge of web technologies and/or OSC far longer (obviously). Right, i have absolutly no programming knowledge... Is there someone that can set everything up and then basiclly give me the key to the store? Or is it more complicated then that? THe only experiecne i have is with an ebay store, where it is very easy to load products change colors etc, but you do not have many other features.
