Import existing database

Fulton

Recommended Posts

We have a 15 year old relational database (59,000 items) which we would like to use. I haven't found much discussion regarding the import & implementation of an established database for use by the OSCommerce system.

Is this feasible?

Would there be better open source suggestions to consider?

Are you importing an SQL dump file?

If it's in Excel format, or you can get it in that format, just use the Easy Populate Contribution -- http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,500/ .... many people have it. I don't use it, but it's my understanding that v2.79 works better than the more current ones, but that might have just been what one person told me. Regardless, that's an option.

Hi Craig,

Very nice to make your acquaintence!

I checked for the first few days and then stopped being so persistent (since this is my first OSCommerce community post - & I figured I was lost in the mix).

Just today at 1pm EST, I got my first email from the "osCommerce Community Support Forums" email address, which indicated that I had a reply.

So, I logged in to find your message from the 25th and then several more to follow.

I think I'm 'with the program' now.

Anyway, as you probably gleaned from my question, I'm looking at frameworks for database driven websites and want to know what OSCommerce among others can do to deliver our ecommerce website and it's products for sale (and/or what roles it can play).

What is your company?

What websites would you have me check out that show stuff you've worked on?

Me:

My company is a small full service advertising agency in Newark, DE called MADHouseGraphics.com

(M.A.D. = Marketing Advertising Design). Check us out, (as you probably recognize, online/current ).

We've been together since college and moved to online marketing by necessity as the "net bubble" era picked up steam, late last century.

My current full time project is a party supplies company in DE, & this project promises to keep me busy for some time to come.

Best Regards,

Nathaniel-

A bump.

I am also interested in any information regarding importing existing databases.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Craig

Hi, yes that's the question.

I had looked around the forum and didn't find importing databases as a topic.

So, I figured that I'd better look elsewhere as that would seem to be rather a basic need for an ecommerce app.

At this time, I'm trying to coerce database output from the company who administers the local company database. Their data management system uses FilePro natively, but at the time of this message, they are working to provide me with their data in MySQL format, though I think this is a first for them. Regarding that, I have asked for the whole kit-&-kaboodle, but they rather insist on what fields I can specify. The concern I have here, is setting up php scripting to query a MySQL DB, only to have a field added, moved or changed later and consequentially nullify the instructions I've configured regarding where and what to look for when php runs it's routines.

Since I haven't reached even the testing phase yet, I really don't know what to expect, so I assume I'll have to begin my work on the data I'm given according to their sensibilities, whatever they may be.

No answers? Seems odd...

It is defintely possible as jpweber suggests and getting your existing database into excel would be a good start. I have not played too much with the MySQL database so far, but I used to be a SQL programmer for Oracle and Siebel systems.

With the Oracle system, I used to convert exisiting data into excel, then load into MS Access and use the SQL commands to run imports (with a bit of modification). The SQL I used though is different to MySQL and I am not sure if this works having not experimented so far with the database.

I am sure someone can advise more if this is feasible.

My Toolbox: Crimson Editor, Adobe Photoshop CS2.0, Expression Web, Macromedia Suite 8.0, Cinema 4D, Nvu.

Thanks JP,

I'll look into that.

It seems strange that I find so little discussion on this.

Is this because the question so fundamental that the threads on this topic are too old to appear, or is it possible that I'm rather unique in attempting this utilization (existing DB migration)?

On that note, I'm still digging for recommendations on php (LAMP-based) ecommerce "solutions" to structure a pretty conventional ecommerce website.

(I currently have cpanel running with Fantastico if ANYONE'S comments arise re: that setup)
