Adding new product labels/flags

Hi there

 

I have been searching the forums and contributions sections but to no avail.

 

My osCommerce site sells different kinds of food. I'd like to be able to flag products according to certain criteria, e.g. "gluten-free", "diabetic", etc. I know I could make a category for them, but it doesn't solve my problem. If an item is flagged as gluten-free, for example, then I want a small gluten-free icon to display either next to the product name or in the product description. A product item could therefore have a few icons displaying.

 

Just like for categories, I also want to be able then to call up a product listing of all products flagged as gluten-free, etc.

 

I don't necessarily want to create a separate category for each flag as there will be lots of them. The categories which exist already are, for example, baking, cooking, dried fruit, flour, etc. Since there are already quite a few of those, I don't want to add 10 more just for the flagged criteria.

 

What's very important is to be able to create these "flags" or "labels" in admin, adding an image to serve as the icon. On the page where you fill in the product details, such as Product Name, Price, Description, Model, etc, that's where I think it would be a good idea to be able to choose the flag.

 

I do know about Product Attributes and Options, but this is not an option, but a characteristic of the product, just like indicating whether a product is taxable or not. Maybe it's like adding new fields to the database that work like Tax Classes. But searchable for product listings.
