TekWiz
Hi! I'm going to be advising someone on creating an online store. I had a previous bad experience with osCommerce when someone I know purchased a standard shopping cart template at template monster and I suggested that he give it to "justtwogirls" for conversion to osCommerce. After paying $420, what we got was not only not quite what the original template looked like but for some reason I was unable to add any items to the front page and they wouldn't provide any help. Trying to follow some instructions on their support board, I was unsuccessful as I got errors. I suspect that they damaged something in the code as they were trying to integrate the design into the osCommerce code... To make matters worse I then discovered that the same exact template was available at http://www.websitetemplatedesign.com/ as a fully working osCommerce template for only a little more $. Well after a month of back and forth frustrating emails and fruitless attempts, and lost potential business and time, I gave up. Eventually my friend just signed up with a professional provider for his type of business and they gave him a fully working site with all the products... Well, now someone else I know has a similar type of business and wants my advice. I went back to http://www.websitetemplatedesign.com/ and even tried the fully working store and it seems great. I don't know if I should anticipate any problems adding products to the front page. I didn't think that should have been a problem, but I guess only someone with experience with osCommerce could tell me if this can be an issue for some reason. Other than that, I am wondering about their offer to "install" the template for an extra charge. I suppose it's a good idea? Also is there any reason to use "their hosting" (level 10) to avoid any issues and to make this a smooth as possible? Thanks for any guidance you can give me... Jerry. driftwood
If it's someone else's money go for the full works is my advice or you'll be left to do the tidy up job if anything goes wrong. Search the internet you'll find loads of templetes for OSC and it's clones. Installing a templete should be just a case of copying the files over and enabling them in the admin section, perhaps a bit more. Changing the look of a site can be as simple as replacing the images for different ones with the same size and names or editing the stylesheet. I'm no an expert and if I can do any puppy can, really. Depends on just how good this friend is I should think  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OSC user for years and no coder, so I've earned my stripes. Feel free to private message me.
