Thanks Monika, i will give it a go.

I usually design my sites on-line so i can access them from anywhere, but i am having problems with my hosting company because the ftp server keeps going down and i can't upload any files. Do you know if it is easy to transfer your domain name and webspace to another company.

well I do not know for other hosts, but it's VERY easy to transfer to mine. Cannot post host name here though ... you could check out my website or PM me.

As for loading osC, you should be given a http folder where to copy all files, then run install. I installed apache/php/mysql all manually, separately, so I do not know xampp myself, sorry.

You don't need to transfer your domain name only change the DNS.

You can get your new host and set the site up using your IP address only then when you are ready change the DNS to point at your new host. Hardly any down time that way.

www.gearworx.net are doing a pay for one get two years at the moment, they seem ok to me. No I don't work for them ;)

Another option for your local server is apache2triad1.5.4.exe, that includes all you need in easy setup and you can even send email from it.

Thanks for the tips. I have now installed Xampp onto my root drive and it seems to work. I am now in the process of installing oscommerce from install, but i cannot figure out what Database server to put in.

I have tried localhost and get the message "No database selected". Sorry i might be a bit thick on this but could someone help out.

thanks

Adrian

It should be localhost but I can't remember if you need to make a new database on the server or OSC makes it for you. Your username is prob root with password blank

You are right with root and blank. I needed to use localhost for the database name as well. Well it worked.

Thank you all for your help. Hope i can return the favour.

You shouldn't have to use any perticular name for the database Ade.

Localhost is the name of the database server, you might want to check you've not imported OSC tables into the the Mysql default database or you'll find it difficult to move the site later.

I'm using the xampp setup locally too. Be sure to install oscommerce into the htdocs folder in xampp. I learned how to do it through posts on the forum. :)
