UK VAT deduction system and shipping issues

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

First up I'm a new OSC user and genereally new to PHP and other things, the learning curve is near vertical but very rewarding at the same time.

I'm setting up a shop here in the UK, and one of the things I need is to have VAT added for all customers on the UK mainland, but deducted when someone lives abroad or on the UK offshore islands (Guernsey, Jersey etc). So its not a problem having items coming up with VAT but a system whereby at checkout VAT is deducted? Any ideas how to do this?

Also for royal mail shipping of the items, which are generally small jiffy bag bits and pieces I'm going to use Royal Mail 1st class recorded and special delivery. Anyone know a good module for this? The ones I tried went nuts and wouldn't work properly!

This is a bit much but on last thing, if you look at the screenshot below

The layout for that product info sheet is very different to what i've got, theres no tabs and its one page (assuming this is MS2 standard), also for weight I can enter any units like KG or grams?! Is that screenshot showing a module upgrade? If so which one as I really need to be able to input units, (I tried modding the php file for product_listings.php to no avail)

Its alot to ask but these are the main things from stopping me from launching. Heres the site by the way (the one product there is for test purposes only)

Many many thanks,

Shahid

The screenshots in the knowledge base are from the new MS3 which is not released to the public yet. It's a bit confusing and certainly not helpful for users to get osC to do what they want it to do.

Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome.

Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong.

The logo goes to this url on my site

http://www.unlimitedrc.co.uk/catalog/images/oscommerce.gif

There is another way to change it described in the documentation, but I just deleted the oscommerce one and placed my logo in but renamed it oscommerce.gif (into the catalog/images directory) and it comes up.

If you want to add your logo to invoices and packing slips as I did, you need to go into includes then your language directory and find packingslip.php and invoice.php (or soemthing like that) there is a directory in that which poitns to an oscommerce logo on the invoices/packing slips. Just put your own logo in the corroesponding folder and change the directory to suit the name if your logo.

As for making progress on two different tax charges, a quick test and logging in as someoen from a non vat chargeable area (as specified in my tax zones) doesnt reprice the goods!

Anyone from the osc developers got any ideas?

thanks

Sorry my bad, it works! (logged into wrong account)

I just set one tax zone for Uk mainland and another at 0% tax and put one country in it, when I logged into an account with that country everything was set to zero tax.

The only issue is now adding all the countries and zones (hundreds of them) to the non vat list

Are you sure you read the bumf correctly when you registered for VAT? My understanding was that you had to charge it also when sending goods to other EC countries too (unless dealing with a VAT registered company).

Ill look into that, I already work part time in another rc retail store and we duduct VAT on anything going foreign or offshore, like the Guernsey islands etc, though I will double check on that.

Im not vat reg yet, this is just in prep for if it does have to happen ;)

Also, anyone figured out how to hack the code to put units on the end of weights?

cheers
