Sheffield_Tiger
New to osCommerce and setting up a small test store for a smaller selection of products from a larger catalogue. Very impressed by some of the stores in the showcase section...but I don't know how busy they are? Looking to migrate an existing, established store with circa 93'000 page views / 8'000 visits daily, with a catalogue of around 7000 products to the osCommerce platform Love the flexibility of the osCommerce system as opposed to many other shopping cart setups, and the OS nature is the key reason for looking in that direction - so all development work and additions are made in-house instead of through an ecommerce provider - so I get what I want, how I want, not how someone else says I can have it, and to suit my requirements, not those of an outside company's client base So it has to be a winner, right? Any osCommerce veterans care to comment on it's stability under the load of a busy site (the plan is to eventually run 2 sites from the same osCommerce installation...possibly more to cope with different customer bases and different promotions/product themes since the product range is quite wide) Is osCommerce up to the job? jasonabc
In a word - yes. Bear in mind the performance of the store will have far more to do with the hardware you are running it on than any inefficiencies with the core code. I don't know if you have done so already, but if you are expecting large volumes of traffic it would be prudent to invest in a decent hardware infastructure (servers, load balancers etc) to guarantee fast response times and maximum uptime. Glad to hear it.......I'd best get developing then and yes, it will be running on a solid hardware base. And I don't mean on lycos! :D
Gil_e_n
I've seen large stores run off osc with no problems before. Something I would suggest, however, would be to look into optimizing your version of osc. It's not nearly as efficient as you'd want for a large site, because of all the features that most sites don't use (banners, for example.) There's a thread in my signature on optimizing osc - if I were you, I'd look into it. Always BACK UP your files and your database before making any changes.
