noakes
I have just installed OSC and when opening the site in IE6 I am getting the message... Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/noakes/public_html/osc/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. I have used smartftp to set the CHmod of the config.php file, this sets to 644 OK but I still get the error message in the browser. When I set it to 444 which is suggested might sort this problem out the 444 setting does not stay set, if I navigate out of the 'includes' folder in Smartftp and then back to the file its set itself back to 644. I'm guessing that if I can get this setting to stick! it may cure the problem. any ideas to sort this out or any other way to stop the warning would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance Roy

EatDVD
I got annoyed with it and decided to just disable the message altogether, you can it in includes/header.php Just find: // check if the configure.php file is writeable and comment out the next 5 lines. jrhanssen
I had the same problem, but found a solution. I used contribution by Steve Lionel (se description below). You can download the contribution her: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2137 Kind regards, John Richard ------------------- An osCommerce Contribution by Steve Lionel ([email protected]). This contribution adds to the Admin panel a tool to manage the protection status of the configure.php files. In normal use, these files, catalog/includes/configure.php and catalog/admin/includes/configure.php, must be set to "read-only" status to prevent the warning "I am able to write to the configuration file". While the installation instructions say you should "chmod" these files, it leaves the meaning of this unclear to the novice and, on some hosts, one cannot set a file read-only through normal methods. When installed, a "Protection of Configuration" page is added under Tools. This page displays the current protection status of the two configuration files and provides an easy means of changing the status. When you need to make changes to one of the configure.php files, use this tool to temporarily unprotected it so that you can upload a replacement. After replacing the file, go back to the tool and re-protect the file.

aardvarkmultimedia
ask Your hosting company they will let You know how this can be done.I mean ask them how file permissions can be set. Satish I had the same problem using FTP - try setting the permissions in your website hosting control panel. I'm using Cpanel and was able to do this by going into file manager. johlin
I had this same problem and kept trying different chmods UNTIL I REALIZED that I was changing the WRONG config.php!!! I was changing the one in the ADMIN folder and it needs to be the one in the INCLUDES folder! I hope this saves someones sanity...
kewlstuffz
i have this website online yet it doesnt make sales lol so i didnt notice this error message till about 2 months ago and i fixed it after a little tinkering and reading. i never use the hosting companies control panel so i had a little trouble with it. i have no idea how long that error has been happening since i didnt even view the website for months. so i came to search for the resolution, after trying to set the permissions with FTP and failing i read another post on how to disable the error message by editing the config.php file. that worked! so now i got a new hosting plan and decided to reinstall the store. and there is that " i am able to write to your config.php bla bla" messege. GO TO YOUR HOSTING COMPANIES CONTROL PANEL TO SET THE PERMISSIONS, do not use FTP programs. this worked the first time and i didnt have to edit anything eles. set it so that web user permissions are read and execute set owner permissions to read and execute UNCHECK the owner wite permissios box and web user box should already be unchecked if it isnt. DO IT "im not stupid, im just practicing" :)
