How to set maxium number of characters in a product description?

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction?

 

I have a website selling car parts, and many of the product descriptions are hundreds of characters long.

 

Obviously when you've got a page full of 20-25 products each with a long description, it makes the webpage very long itself, and for some customers, difficult to find what they are after

 

So, how can I set the maxium number of characters in a product description, after which an option of 'click here for more details' is shown? I used to use GT (get trolleyed) which was easy to config for this, OSC Max seems to hide this option

 

Any ideas - must be a simply one I think
