How to create a homepage with a custom amount of new products added

Hello,

 

I'm trying to create a new layout for my site and i'd like for the hope page to include new products added in one table and specials in another. I'm currently using STS v4.1 which has been a great help. When i use the $whatsnewbox and %specialbox command, it will only bring 1 item. I've tried parsing the products_new.php code but with no avail. Any help is much appreciated.

 

 

As well if anyone knows how to adjust picture sizes in whatsnewbox to be different from the adjusted size in the admin.
