Editing the Main Content Area in STS

I just recently started using OSC and found the STS contribution to be awesome in helping me change the layout of my site. I've been able to achieve a basic layout using purely HTML and CSS for the main page, however, I also would like to be able to change the main content area on the page.

The STS instructions explain how to create individual product templates, but I want to change the styling of the homepage content (the number of products displayed and how they are displayed). Is this possiable or would be a better idea to just leave out the $content tag for the homepage and use HTML to create what I want?

Thanks for your help.

I've been browsing around in the file you mentioned. I don't know anything about PHP, but I was able to modify somethings. However, I have no clue how to dictate the number of products shown and how they are displayed.

I'm basically trying to modify it to look similar to the templates that are avliable commercially. Are there any contributions that would help in this process? I've searched through them a bunch, but it can be rather overwhelming.
