Several SEO Steps Taken - What next?

Now that I've completed the fundamentals of my website (Amino Z) I've spent the last week or two tweaking it for SEO. This is what I've done so far:

- Chemo's SEO URL's contrib installed (and implemented for all modules)

- Dynamic HTML sitemap created ((http://www.aminoz.com.au/site_map.php)

- Dynamic Google XML sitemap created

- Began exchanging links with external websites

- Began posting links in fitness related forums

- Installed SEO Assistant to monitor progress

- Updated robots.txt to exclude non-content pages

- Removed spider sessions

- Removed "refresh" on index page from autologin contrib

One query in particular I have is that my HTML sitemap ((http://www.aminoz.com.au/site_map.php) takes a few seconds to load due there being thousands of pages dynamically created upon request. Is this a problem?

I've noticed bots now crawling the website. However I'm curious as to what further steps should be taken?

Thanks for the help!!

The site map is a problem. With no text on the page, the SE's may consider it a link farm. Every title of your site starts with amino z. That will hurt you.

Jack - thanks for the feedback.

I've made changes to the two problems you pointed out above:

- Sitemap I have added a blurb at the top of the page

- Page titles I have changed around FROM Amino Z - [PAGE] TO [PAGE] - Amino Z

Will this help?

For the sitemap, it is hard to say. The SE's don't say how they determine if it is a valid link page or not. Typically, if the links total over 50, you are on shaky ground.

The changes in the titles should help.

okay thanks for the advice.

steve - i'll check out that forum today, cheers

jack - hmm okay i'm going to have to look into this more. there's thousands of links on this page which i'm guessing isn't a good thing. meanwhile the catch 22 being that if I take down all the articles, Q&A's, etc. then I might as well take the whole sitemap down because that's already on the left menu. I think I might look at an alternative to the food database though - this significantly slows down load time because there's over 6000 items in the database.

oh and also I have just added RSS feeds for the articles, Q&As and newsdesk sections of the website. Now in the process of submitting them.

After reading steve's thread, I will be looking at optimizing the pages further. More specifically, header tags and page cache and even this froogle auto-feed. With all the coding I have implemented, page load times may pose a problem so this needs to be worked on.

Bit of an update on this. As per the advice given, I have removed the nutritional database listing from the site map (rather there is a link to the full listing).

Header tags are also installed now for each module. All products, articles, calculators and info pages have customised tags stored in mysql. Q&A's can either be customised or automatically generated based on the question. Food database tags are automatically generated from the name and description of the food.

3 RSS feeds have been established and submitted to multiple websites.

Page titles have again been modified. Previously they would be more generic eg. a Q&A in the fat loss section would be entitled "Fat Loss Q&A's - Amino Z". They are now more unique and have the first 40 characters of the question at the beginning of each page.

ah okay gotcha. I did have the robots.txt disallow - but didn't have the meta tag. All done.

New focus on optimisation is to include more keywords throughout the pages. I found that on a few pages there was very little text, so I am now incorporating introductions relevant to each page.

Eg. http://www.aminoz.com.au/food_browse.php - rather than just listing the categories on the website, I have added a key-word abundant introduction.

Hello,

Also posting in forums is also a good way to get baklinks to your domain. You can also start a forum of your own or start with a blog site of your own to boost your PR.

Yeah good point there. I have been posting on a select few fitness/bodybuilding forums every now and then. However I do need to make this more consistent. Not only for SEO, but also to build up the member base for further marketing exercises. The more exposure the better.

Cool, I enjoyed your site. Some good content on there which is great seo. Like the recipes section, although it could do with more recipes. My personal favourites are muesli/chocolate protein shake powder with milk and chicken with instant noodles, yummy. You probably need to spend most of time doing link building now though really.

Thanks for the feedback. I have to work out a more efficient way of using the recipes section - it takes forever to add all the ingredients in! Will have to learn AJAX or something like that...eek.

Yep link building is something I agree I have to work on. I swapped links with a few sites before, but have been focussing more on content lately. I'm actually beginning to have people contact me about swapping links (happy days!). :D
