I am completely lost!!!!

Okay I am pretty good and researching stuff before posting but here is where I am stuck.

I am just starting my site and I want to set up on a design template from the start.

Want it to look different from the start.

okay so I know I could get some templates from the contributions section and thats where I want to start since buying templates are expensive.

But what I am lost about is actually getting a design template that I like. Where can I see what it would look like?? DO I have to download them to see them?

Also my hosting has oscommerce which my webdesigner has already installed for me. Does this make a difference in setting up the template.

I am sure I can ask my designer about this but I really want to understand and work things myself.

Thank you for any help!!!

Oh boy, you are a long way home. OScommerce does no allow you to easily (and easily is the code word) install a template that you either design or purchase elsewhere. In fact, in my experience is easirer to install OSC and then tweak the existing template to your liking.

Programs like Mambo and Joomla allow you to design any template independently from the content, but in OSC they are more intertwined. There are versions (STS is one) where a templating system is used, and a good designer can make OSC look like anything they want.

In essence OSC does not have a single file you can use to make global changes, but rather you have to modify a number of files and often make the change a few times in the same file (in case of conditional statements).

I think that if you really like a certain template, assuming it wasn't espressely made for OSC, you are better off to show it to your designer and tell him/her: make it happen.

I asume there are people that have designed templates and system to make the process easier, but so far I have only designed my own and from that experience I can tell you that buying a template is a waste of money.

Good luck to you

I would have 2 agree with corrado444.

OSC is not template friendly. Whenever you install any mods you will end up having to rewrite code etc to work with templates. The easiest way is to just hard code your site. Template conformity unfortunately is years down the road and is going to require a complete overhaul of OSC structuring.

Oh okay so I basically have to code the changes I want. That I can handle right now I am just trying to find out where in the world to go and do that!! I just asked my web designer so hopefully that will make it easier. Thanks!!!

Don't forget that some of us do that for a living. Your designer may or may not have the proper experience, if he/she does, fine (or if she want to get the experience) but otherwise you would be better off to hire someone with experience to integrate your design. It's going to be quicker and cheaper.

The good news is that in an ecommerce site you don't need to change the template that often. BTW, do look into STS. I have never used it, but it's on my "to do" list.

If you need to hire someone else, post it in the forum somewhere or replay to this and I'll be happy to negotiate a rate for you.

I actually have found out how to go in and change things and things are going well, so I think I got a handle of it.

But now I have a problem with the create an account and login link.

My store domain is actually a subdomain, I think. So when I click on those two links i get an error message and notice that my original domain in now present with the create_account.php in the address field of the error page. So how do I fix that?
