sunnybrook Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I thought I was InTelligent until I started working with osCommerce :( I am sure there are lots of people who have installed osCommerce under XAMPP and run it locally. Perhaps it is me, perhaps it is the documentation. I am sure it must be me but I can't get past the first hurdle. The documentation says... =============== "Using phpMyAdmin or another tool, create your database and user, and assign that user to the database. Write down the name of the database, username, and password for this database for the database installation procedure." "Step 1 Please customize your new installation with the following options: Import Catalog Database - Install the database and add the sample data - leave this box checked Checking this box will import the database structure, required data, and some sample data. (required for first time installations) Automatic Configuration - Save configuration values - leave this box checked Checking this box will save all entered data during the installation procedure to the appropriate configuration files on the server. Click the "Continue" button. " ============= OK, it can be any sort of "database"? Anything as long as it is interrogateable (?) by SQL? Is this a blank database for osCommerce to fill? I can just go into Access, for example, and create a dummy file and save it in htdocs (under XAMPP) or does it go somewhere else? The database server is 127.0.0.1? MySQL should be running under XAMPP? The user and password are osCommerce functions or relate to the original Access database? It's ok ;) I can manage the "Continue" button. (btw I know it is off topic but any ideas? My XP (home) system sees my other two Win98 systems on my network since I installed XAMPP but for some reason they no longer see it. )
sunnybrook Posted July 31, 2006 Author Posted July 31, 2006 Should have added... "Step 2 Please enter the database server information: Database Server ? localhost The database server can be in the form of a hostname, such as db1.myserver.com, or as an IP-address, such as 192.168.0.1. Username ? username The username used to connect to the database server. An example username is 'mysql_10'. Note: Create and Drop permissions are required at this point of the installation procedure. This first user should have CREATE privileges on the database Password ? password The password is used together with the username, which forms the database user account. Database Name ? database name The database used to hold the data. An example database name is 'osCommerce'. Persistent Connections: Enable persistent database connections. Note: Persistent connections should be disabled for shared servers. Session Storage: Files Database (choose Database)" ....with regard to my queries.
sunnybrook Posted July 31, 2006 Author Posted July 31, 2006 Oh.....I think I've got it.... From my browser I ran http://localhost/phpMyAdmin (just a few words in the documentation would have helped there :) ) then I just created a database, called osCommerce, ignored the request for other stuff, and exited.... then I started the install.... then I had to go back into phpMyAdmin again to find that my username was "root" (big sigh) so, wow, then I could continue with the install process and it installed ok. Only taken three hours to figure that out :)
Iggy Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 But next time it will only take 3 minutes to install :) There's a curve for sure but you generally only have to jump those hurdles once. Congrats and if you run into problems don't give up! Iggy Everything's funny but nothing's a joke...
