Remove Manufacturer

I'm looking to completely remove any instance of manufacturers from my client's site.

 

This means no heading and no area within the search page.

 

Rather than just go in and blindly hack code that I don't understand, I'm wondering if there is a way to just "turn it off".

 

Detailed help is appreciated.
