scifier2
There has to be a better way for os commerce to handle the password situation. How can you easily and simply change the admin user and password. I duped one of my sites and created new username password etc. for database and so forth. copied everything over and everything is linking to the database fine with the new user and password except for 1 thing and that is the admin panel. it did not change the original passwd file to the new settings and nothing in any documentation anywhere that i can find talks about this. when and how is this passwd file created and where does it get its info. it sure doesnt get it from the config.php file which is stupid stupid stupid. why doesnt oscommerce fix this. you cant edit the passwd file (tried that) as the user name is shown and the password is encrypted (doesnt show as true). i can login with the old username and password to get access but i would like it to be the same as user and database. can anyone explain this stupidty on oscommerce. very frustrated with this. Jack_mcs
Password protection, when using the .htaccess method, is server dependant so it can't be setup in oscommerce. That's why it doesn't come included. You can install the admin access contribution and that will work like you are expecting it to but it is a lot of code changes to just accomplish that. If your host is using CPanl, then there is an option to change the password in there. If not, you just need to edit the .htaccess file in admin to use the correct path, which would have changed when you moved the site. Jack I think you're not understanding the problem. the problem is in oscommerce passwd file for the admin are of the site. has nothing to do with cpanel. the admin is part of oscommerce. if what you were saying was true then the passwd file would have been changed to be correct when the site was set up. it did not. this is an oscommerce prob. path is not the prob. htaccess is not the prob its oscommerce that is the prob on the passwd file. Gil_e_n
There is no oscommerce password file. Even the contribution I know of that password protects the osc admin (Admin Access Levels, which is not recommended for being the sole securer of your admin folder due to some security issues) stores the password in the database. Most everyone I know password protects using htaccess. I know in my webhost, when I used their password protect a folder function in the admin section, the password files were created in a special password folder above the public_html folder. If you set up password protection using an option in your webhost's control panel, then the password file will be wherever your webhost's control panel puts the password files. If you did not, and did not manually set it up with htaccess, then I have no idea how on earth you passworded your admin section. Always BACK UP your files and your database before making any changes. Before asking questions, check out the Knowledge Base. Check out the contributions to see if your problem's solved there. You are mistaken. There is no passwd file in oscommerce. When you setup a new oscommerce shop, the admin is not protected at all. If you,or someone, don't take steps to protect it, it won't be protected.
