blondienan Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Several months ago, I hired a company to put me "online". I was trying to use their $500 development package so to help save money I submitted to them everything in a Word format for them to just get me running. They didn't use any of their expertise or creation, etc. It seems they just put me on with the osCommerce program. I supplied the Home Page, Categories, About, Policies, etc. There were many changes, tweaks, etc I wanted them to do for me before launching because I was not at all happy about how "unprofessional" the site looked but they told me I had used up the $500. So I did have them launch the site almost a month ago simply because I 'm paying $35/mo and was frustrated paying that even though I was not live. I have done nothing to market the site and haven't even told friends yet because I don't want anyone going there since it doesn't look the way I would like. Can anyone tell me HOW I can now go back into the pages that they have set up to make text changes, add pics, etc??? I would like to change the colors since I'm not happy with how it looks but I can't seem to even do that although I have tried on the style sheet page I have figured out how to get my products on there and find that easy to navigate but for anything else I am lost. Is there anything I can do to find out how to do what I need? I've read about Joomla and that program seems very dummy user friendly (like me) but I'd have no clue as to how to get that on my pages and site. Any help would be appreciated more than you would know. I've spent many, many hours reading posts but it seems to confuse me more and more. Thanks so much and I will hope that someone will take pity on me and help
abra123cadabra Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 You could start reading through the knowledge base or download the lastest documentation. Both are available through the dropdown menu at the top of this page. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product. Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome. Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong.
redria Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 hi, you can change your wording by login on to your admin page it usually is yourdomain.com/admin or what ever file is called for example mine is shop so I would type mydomain.co.uk/shop/admin. Find the tools section then click on file manager, find the page you would like to edit, for instance the privacy.php double click on it. I always copy the code and save it in word just in case I mess it up. Then go done to 'Put here your Privacy Notice information' if you can't find it just click ctrl f (edit ? find) and type it in. Inside the ' ? delete the words and place in what you would like it to say. Also you can change the font, size and colour <font face="Verdana" size="1" color="#666666"> With the pictures I download filezila for free and put in my ftp info, but if you are just using explorer that?s fine, just logon using your ftp user name and password, open your public_html and then the file that contains your store e.g. mine is under a folder shop. Then find a folder called images, try copying this folder to your hard drive and then alter the pictures to how you like them, but just name them under the names in the folder so they go into the right places on you page. Just simply copy them back into the images folder by using drag and drop in to the ftp again. Also is your hosting contract for a year the $35 month one, as I have a very good hosting account, which really is built around online shops and oscommerce, also if you would like a different look why not buy a template. The hosting account I have is with heartinternet.com and it is a business account also I bought a template http://osc.template-help.com/10533/index.php and i will give it to you for free if you like it, (if that is legal?) you are able to change all the images and text and fonts. And I will be will to help you with it as I did also struggle with finding a hosting and how to set up my template and pretty much all of it. Still learning:) Hope this helps Good Luck

Guest Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Hi, I have a very similar problem. I have just bought a template having been told by the company that I could amend it in FrontPage & now find out that I can't (is this right?). I need to change text, colour schemes, logo etc. I have worked out how to use admin tool to add to product catalogue etc. If you have any success with changing your store, maybe you can let me have details of how to do it & I can do the same for you? I basically need a beginner's guide to this but I find that the knowledge base is written for people who already have a certain degree of knowledge about it i.e. they know what all the jargon means! I know it must be possible to achieve the things I need to do & if anybody can give me a bit of guidance it will be well-received. All the best jetbaby
redria Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Hi i dont know about frontpage, but mine also said it could be changed in dreamweaver and it pretty much can't so instead you can change it quite simular in you admin area under file manager. You can change the text by going on the the page you would like to change for example (as above) privacy.php. go to filemanger double click on privacy.php and you will have a load of code in front of you make sure you always back your code up (in word or something) go to 'Put here your Privacy Notice information' (cant find it just go to edit-find and type 'Put here your Privacy Notice information' ) then type your wording in that you want. To change the font, size and colour you will see <font face="Verdana" size="1" color="#666666"> in the face= " put what ever font you would like e.g. face="Arial" and its changed, for size the higher the number the bigger the font. Finally for the colour, if you dont know that much about colour codes (like me :) ) dont know if frontpage is the same as dreamweaver but you can click on what colour you would like your fonts and it shows you the code at the side. If not try google and ask for web colour codes or something. the above message i have put a link to my orginal template and here is my link to what i have changed it to redria.co.uk ave a look around it is still under construction, but if you like anything you see or just need simular help just ask and l do my best to help Hope this helps sorry if not take care Ria
Guest Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 They didn't use any of their expertise or creation, etc. It seems they just put me on with the osCommerce program. what a rip! i hope you payed them via credit card or something... i would certainly do a chargeback to get the funds back. charging money for installation labor is one thing, but when they're supposed to do much more than just that.... they ripped you off
