What is Average Rating?

When in the admin side of the store and you have selected a product to look at, so its details appear on the right of the screen. Under the image is a line which says "average Rating 0.00".

 

What is this Average rating, how is it calculated and what can it be used for?

How could one get the average review score in the product listings?

you would have to create another column and for each product do an extra query to retrieve each product's reviews. There is already code that does it with the stock osc and contributions like this one.
