Upgrade issue

Hi! I'm really new to dealing with osCommerce and could use some help. We have a site with an existing osCommerce store and as a result of two moves to new web servers in about a month, it has become ... unstable, let's say. It's at the point now where it has become nearly unuseable and we urgently need to get this fixed. Everyone who has tried to help us so far has not been able to get it working properly.

I believe a fresh install might do the trick, and so I have downloaded the latest version and would like to upgrade our site. The instructions are not all that clear to someone like myself who has not dealt with installing/upgrading OSCommerce before. I've read the following Knowledge Base documents:

Upgrading osCommerce

Pre-Installation Procedure

Web Based Installation Procedure

I'm confused by a number of the steps in those documents, such as 'migrate data' in the upgrading document. I'm wondering if what we need to do is simply install as a new store, but point it to the existing database?

Any assistance anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

That really depends upon what version your store was and what the version you wish to install is.

If they are the same then you could get away with installing the new files and should be good to go.

If they are different versions then you may need to upgrade your database to match the new versions schema before it will work.

Hi again, Jim. Just wanted to let you know that one of the folks who was trying to help managed to get things functioning, with a few minor glitches to sort out. Therefore, the heat is off as far as doing a full upgrade in order to get the store working. *whew*

Anyway, thanks again for your input, I'll keep it in mind when we do go ahead and upgrade in the not too distant future.
