Need dummy proof instructions regarding register globals

I'm hosting through GoDaddy with the Linux version so I have Php. I uploaded the catalog folder to my directory and when I went to "mydomain/catalog" I got the register globals is disabled error message. I see a php.ini file in my hosting folder with godaddy but I can't seem to edit it so..... I downloaded the patch that I found for register globals here:

The first one by Vger, deleted the original catalog folder that I installed on my host and then uploaded this one to my host and now when I go to "mydomain/catalog" I'm get a page not found error. I thought that this fix had all the files needed for the store and that you just upload this one instead of the original oscommerce download. Guess not.

Does anyone have some "dummy proof" instructions for getting my store installed that they can give me? I'm so frustrated that I can't even get past the first step. :(

Since I first posted this I did figure out how to change the php.ini file both by enabling it and also by using the patch which I assume is the better way to go. However, I am at a total loss now as to how to set permissions on folders. I guess that's what I need to do next 'cause I just can't get past the first couple of pages of the install. Ugh! Maybe this just wasn't the store for me. :(

One other thing is that when the store install page comes up the graphics are not completely showing. Is this normal? I can only see the top half of the oscommerce logo, the install button and the upgrade button on the first page.
