Password Protecting admin

Anybody can tell me how to password protect admin?

 

When I set up OSCommerce it required me to give user name and password but the admin interface is open just by typing in my url/admin

I really need to make this require me to use the user name and password but havn't a clue how to do this or why my installation is wide open!

Check your hosts control panel for how to password protect it or search the forums for htaccess.
