Guest Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 What exactly do you get when you buy a template? I have my eye on one in particular but I use STS 3.0 and I'm bit worried that I wouldn't be able to convert/merge the template into my existing store. Another concern about buying a template is the images - the template I have my eye on, I kinda like the images but I'd like to play around with them - are they layered psds with full customisability? Anyone bought one who can enlighten me? - any horror stories? I don't mind shelling out my money and working on the template to make it what I really want - but I don't want to shell out my money and find I can't use the thing (I've worked too hard on customising my shop as it is!)
spax Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 Not used one myself but from what I know, if you buy an osCommerce template, it will be a fully functional, osC install. Which will, of course, negate your present STS store. It is possible, the template is built on an older version of osC so you may need to install the updates. Also, because alot of templates have the code moved around somewhat, it maybe more difficult to install contributions. The PSD images are just the Photoshop originals. If you use Photoshop, this can make it easier to alter parts of the image on the template because the image will be in layers. So if you like the template banner but obviously want your text on it, you just change the layer that the text is on, in Photoshop. You don't have to use those though, you can just as easily create your own images and save them with the same names as the template ones. That means you don't have to change any code. I have seen some very good templates, that aren't too expensive. I would have no worries about using one, should the need arise.
php4ever Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 You are right on all the above. Curious though, where are the security patches and why isn't OSCommerce updated with them. I mean Joomla and many other open-source solutions offer each new download already patched and then links to patch files or a patch repository. ~ Jared www.jaredritchey.com
Guest Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 So it would be a problem to make the template fit my existing shop?
