TotalNewbie Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Hi all, I'm sure most of you will think that these questions are a bit "stupid" in lack of a better word but I really need some help in getting started (I only know html, gfx and how to cut and copy javascript). I'm a salesperson not programmer :) I run a very plain webshop (tillbilen.se) and because we have been recieving many customers lately I feel its time to improve the site. The site is simply to slow to shop in and because I just link to a seperate "pay-per-month" webshop with very little features its also very messy at the moment. My newbie questions are the following: 1. I have installed oscommerce (seems to work) and now I need to know how to: "Reset the permissions on /catalog/includes/configure.php to 644 Set the permissions on /catalog/images directory to 777. Reset the permissions on /catalog/admin/includes/configure.php to 644. Create the dir /catalog/admin/backups and set the permissions to 777. Set the permissions on /catalog/admin/images/graphs directory to 777. You need to .htaccess your /catalog/admin directory so that it is password protected. You can use the password manager in your server admin area like cpanel." I really have no idea how to do this and I have no computerexpert friends who can guide me. My site is hosted at b-one.net and in the admin area I cant find any way to password protect or change permissions. If someone wants to tell me where and how to do this, give me the "newbie" step-by-step. :) 2. I had a look at some oscommerce templates from templatemonster.com, some with very nice design, is it difficult to use/install these templates? I used a normal html/flash one for the site but this is a totally different thing :) Ok please dont hate me for my stupid questions, have a great evening all!
deathgod Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 hello victor, those permissions etc.. can be changed in your domains control panel, ask your web hoster for passwords etc.. as this is a feature provided by them and not osC. There are many threads in the installations forum that deals with locating your cpanel. Guess what, i only knew html when i started with osC a few weeks back and it is amazing the amount of control you can have just by using html. take a look at http://www.osstore.co.za/ if you want to get an idea. Also, an essential resource you should bookmark is this thread, http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=139426 i have only discoved it today but if i found it sooner it would have saved me a lot of time so make good use of it. Dont know about monstertemplate but i keep hearing their name everywhere so they must be good. Menou and unome

The problem is that www.b-one.net doesn't offer any help with with passwords and these kind of technical issues, because their services are so cheap they say (its a bit late to change host now, we have 4 websites there). In the b-one control panel i can only turn registerglobals on and off and php error messages.. there must be another way to do it? i will look into those forum threads! good site you had there by the way!
spax Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 You can change permissions with your FTP client. FTP to your site, right-click on a file, select properties or CHMOD or permissions (it will be one of those) and input the correct permissions. If your host can't or won't password protect your directories for you, you really need to get a new host. If you are using Apache with, I think, *Nix OS, you can do it yourself with .htaccess and .htpasswd files. Google for them and you will find how. Or check this: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?s=&...st&p=866814
