idavies Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I have several customers who are based at UK Universities whereby they do not have to pay UK VAT. Can anyone think of a sensible way in which a user can register a UK account, but have an option to declare they are VAT exempt (check box or something) so no VAT is added to the order?
Gil_e_n Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Install Separate Pricing per Customer, create a tax-exempt group, and put those customers in it. I don't know of a way that you could just have a tax-exempt checkbox, but really, I don't think that that would be a wise way to handle it. You'd probably get an awful lot of people claiming ot be tax-exempt. Always BACK UP your files and your database before making any changes. Before asking questions, check out the Knowledge Base. Guest Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 there is module which alters the create account page having a tax-exempt option. Now that is really dodgy though because everyone can signup with that option on. The alternative is to check the cc numbers during checkout. cardholders of such accounts can be identified and then you do not charge vat or other taxes.

I appreciate that a VAT exempt option might be abused - basically to comply a customer has to also fax a VAT exemption certificate, so if that is not forthcoming, the items would not be shipped - so we would be protected. Do you have a location of the module that you referenced?
