Quote marks and extra slashes in descriptions

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm a newbie at osCommerce and just setting up, but understand HTML reasonably well.

On putting a product description up, I've copied the HTML code into the product description box but after previewing, the code is corrupted with extra slashes inserted before inverted commas and quote marks (e.g. ... You\'ve enjoyed David\\\'s writing ...). I've tried deleting and retyping them but that doesn't make any difference.

Any guidance would be welcome.

Thanks,

David

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem.

My experience with that is the same. What happens is additional backslashing becomes cumulative with each new edit. The first time you input the data, there should be none, but if you correct ANYTHING, then they are added, the more editing attempts, the greater the accumulation becomes. My suggestion is to make your changes with the original version and then copy/paste into the product desc. field (do not edit within the desc field itself). If you typed in the info to begin with, then just copy/paste to a text doc. and then edit it and paste it back to the desc field. This works for me and it might do the same for you.

Dennis & David,

I know there's some coding to eliminate the extra slashes and quote marks. But for now to eliminate this problem, add a \ (back slash) before every ('). An even quicker way to do it is to use a Find and replace function in your favorite text editor to replace all occurrences at once.

I hope this helps.

If I remember correctly, I have had it happen even with the backslashes in place. As David suggests, it backslashes the backslash. Did not seem to make a difference, if I edited the desc field, there they were, but it was a year or so ago that I used that procedure on my test site. Now, I just use the desc. field for a cataloged value and do not run into that issue on my live site.
