How do I disable check-out when product is "OUT OF STOCK"... HELP PLEASE !!

When a product goes "out of stock"... but a user adds it to his/her cart, it shows up as "OUT OF STOCK", but it still lets the user add the product to the cart. How do i not let that happen?

I thought there was an option under configuration that asked under STOCK whether you want the order to continue if out of stock... When I selected that option it would not allow me to checkout if off of stock...

There is a setting in admin. Under Configuration then Stock.

Set allow checkout to false. Item can still be added to the cart but the customer can not checkout.
