SEO URLs without product numbers

I know it's possible to get SEO URLs without the product and category numbers in the URL, but I don't know how. I'm using chemos excellent rewrite contribution and would like to turn this:

 

domain.com/widgets-bigwidget-p-35.html

into something like this:

domain.com/widgets-bigwidget.html

 

Is it a matter of changing my rewrite rules, or do I need a different rewrite contribution?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

it would mean that you would have to have 100% unique product names and yes, change rewrite rules and the SEO class.
