Any problems password protecting the catalog directory?

Recommended Posts

I have an osC installation that will be for vendors (these will be wholesale prices, not available to the general public). I want to restrict access to vendors only. My hosting company uses cpanel and I can password protect directories using that. However, they warned me that this may screw up the osC script (I installed osC using Fantastico).

Will password protecting the catalog directory cause any problems? Right now the admin folder is already passowrd protected. Does anyone know if this will cause any conflicts? Is there another way to restrict access? Thanks for any help.

I often password protect the catalog directory with .htaccess / .htpasswd when I am in the development process, just in case somebody out there finds it before it is ready. After supplying the password to the browser, everything will work as normal.

It is just a little annoying when you go to catalog/admin since you have to input 2 different usernames and passwords.

I'm assuming that by passowrd protecting the catalog folder via my cpanel that it's writing this to .htaccess, correct?

Yeah, it might be a little annoying to have to enter 2 sets of passwords, but if I want to restrict access to this store, I don't have any alternatives, right?
