Hi, Sherly23!

You ought to google the file named 'htpasswd.exe'.

The main idea is to create using htpasswd.exe the file named '.htpasswd' and upload it to your admin root catalog.

It's light'n'easy way to fully protect your administration with md5 encrypting and so on.

It's manual setup so don't be afraid.

btw *nix have that exe file by default =)

PS. Don't forget to tune '.htaccess'

Sherly23, just run it in command line in this way (do not upload to site):

'htpasswd.exe -c .htpasswd sherly23'

'sherly23' - any login

Then you will be asked to type in your password (6-8 symbols).

After it the program will create your '.htpasswd'.

Upload it to your admin root catalog using any FTP program.

Next step - create '.htaccess' with these lines in it:

AuthName "Welcome!"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /home/your_site_catalog/admin/.htpasswd
require valid-user

Finally, upload this file the same way and destination. Enjoy!

PS. Error 401 means you've mistyped;

another possible trap is from your hoster: you may be not allowed to use these methods

There isn't always a need to do things in a complicated way. Try the easy way first.

Go to your Web Hosting Control Panel - look for a link called something like Password or Directory Protection - use that to protect the admin folder. It writes the .htaccess files for you.

I have made the htpasswd with the htpasswd.exe and i have made my .htaccess wich was;

AuthName "Enter password"

AuthType Basic

AuthUserFile /catalog/admin/.htpasswd

require valid-user
