protecting the Admin panel

Can someone point me in the direction of the forum/thread/post that has detailed instructions on how to protect the Admin panel?

I log into /catalog/admin just fine. I get the blue panel Admin with icons/links to the various sections (configuration, tools, customers, etc etc).

The bottom left corner says You are not protected by a secure SSL connection.

However, you click on any of the categories and sometimes I have to re-login (and it'll go straight to that category) and I do have "https" showing OR it goes straight to that category and the "https" is showing. (and the yellow lock IS locked in the lower right of the browser window)

So, evidentally, I DO have a secure SSL connection to my admin - but why not the initial blue panel Admin screen?

Is my admin protected or not? Have I missed a step somewhere? Why am I so confused?

*chuckles* Thanks in advance

Moonlight,

How are you arriving at your admin page? Through a bookmark? If you go to http://yoursite/admin you will be asked to login but it will be non ssl, clicking any link in admin, will send you to https//yoursite/admin/whateverpage and probably require another login.

Yup - you just repeated what I said LOL I NEVER use a bookmark for admin.

Just wanted to make sure arriving at the blue admin panel and NOT being ssl secure at that point is correct.
