HUGE lag time when surfing commerce site

Hi there -

I'm in the process of setting up my first osCommerce site and almost as soon as i started, i stopped. I realized that there is sometimes a HUGE lag time when visiting the site. Sometimes it will not load. Sometimes it goes quickly. Quite honestly, i'm not sure where to begin looking to address the problem, but perhaps you could help.

The address of the store is http://store.qcookies.com

i'm quite new to PHP, but have been picking up on things quickly. So in your responses, please be as specific as possible so that i can do my best to follow along. :)

Thanks in advance!

It seems the problem is with your host it delays on secure.netsolhost.com

please ask them

Yeah, i did. I called network solutions (hence 'netsolhost') as they are the hosting service, and the guy said he ran some simple tests on their end and everything was working perfectly. So he attempted to convince me that it was on my end.

So now i'm stuck in the middle and clueless. :/

you are using a third party secure server so the site has to go on a round trip to connect - i experience this when using the same setup

What I normally do is to explain the performance issues to clients using this setup and recommend using a dedicated certificate and that normally is faster - I may be wrong but it works for me

When I open your shop it has to make 103 requests (mine just needs 2, the demo osC needs 31). Most of them are requests to https://secure.netsolhost.com and that's where you loose the time. You only need https when you are dealing with private data, not when you want to load some pictures.

Contact your host again and ask what can be done. I'm on a shared server too but all my files are in one place.

Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome.

Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong.

How can you tell how many requests a site is making?

I'm using Firefox and have quite a lot of extensions installed. One of them displays "time-to-first-byte", "time-to-completion", "page size" and "number of requests" in the status bar.

When you say that it needs to make a 103 requests, is that how many times it is asking for the same information from the server? Because the ONLY thing i've edited so far is the breadcrumb trail at the top - what i did there was remove "top" because it was pointing to the same place "catalog" was.

So, in a sense i'm confused how just by editing that one line of code could make the number of requests jump from 31 to 103. I'm not understanding something here... Sure, i could go and complain to them that it is their shared SSL server that is delaying my page, but the truth is is that i don't understand what you are talking about in its entirety which means that i won't be able to debate with them as effectively that it is on their end.

If any of you could elaborate on this i would appreciate it. Thanks again--

Also, one reason i went with securing the whole site was because i wasn't comfortable with having "secure and unsecure items" on the page. I don't want people's personal information to be compromised.

Additionally, i cannot get the admin tool to be secure (and work correctly) unless i secure the rest of the site. I understand what you are referring to with not needing images to go through a secure connection. So, really, i'm dealing with a few issues regarding the secure connection:

- The overall lag time (which we're already addressing)

- Worrying about the secure and not secure items on a page

- The admin tool not being secured if i don't secure the rest of the site. To expand on this: in the setup wizard for the site, it asks for the normal, not secured site address, and then it will ask for the secured site address. So, the first round setting it up i did just that - i told it the not secure address and the secured adress (with the secure.netsolhost.com prefix). But when i do that i am left with the browser stating that there are secure and insecure objects on the page, and that the admin panel is not secure. So i tried putting the secure prefix in front of everything and the whole site was secure, as well as the admin tool, but now i'm left with the lag problem.

Hopefully that helps a little bit with how i got to where i am with this issue.
