Price is always 0 on new pages

I am in the process of setting a new store and have added a number of products. The prices always appear as zero until a currency is selected. Then when you move to a different page the same thing happens?!

 

Any hints on how to set the currency to GBP to appear as default?

look for 'define default language currency' and set it to 'GBP'

or go to your admin panel > configuration > localization > currencies
