New Billionaire Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Dear all senior members, I am a newbie here. Actually I would like to setup an online store. Just would like to ask whether the osCommerce shopping cart software or template is free or not. I find nowhere about the price. Hope senior members here give me some guidance. Thanks. Quote

Guest Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 I have downloaded from http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads and have dowmloaded the source from sourgeforge USA. You have downloaded the required files. The files are compressed. This means that they have to be uncompressed. On a Windows machine (your computer), you need to have winzip (or similar) to do the decompression. Once the decompression has been done, you need to load the files onto your webhost (ftp) and run the install file (the information is contained in the documentation). Quote

I think I don't have php program right now. That is the reason I can't open. Besides that, I have not host my site yet. Any idea the cheapest yet the best web hosting company. I mean not those free type that they put some adsense or advertisement in the site. Thanks again. Quote

You need something like winzip to decompress the files. You also need a pure text editor, such as word pad (already on a windows pc) or ultraedit to make changes to php files. Yes, you can also use programs such as dreamweaver. The web hosting company would really depend on your country (you do need to be able to talk to them). You must get an ssl certificate. You must have a domain name. If you have a windows machine, you can try winamp to set it up on your pc before you get a webhost. Google searches do help. There is nothing wrong with adsense if you are getting the money. Quote

Maybe I will try the xampp. Thanks again for the information. Wow, you have started a learning curve. Be prepared to to spend a lot of time on this. What you need first is a program to extract the files. On a pc, get winzip. You then need a text editor to make changes to the files, on a pc you have word pad. You use dreamweaver to layout your non osc pages ie html or htm. It is a big investment when you are first starting and not that easy to use. xampp will install what you need to set up the shop on your pc (apache server, mysql, myphpadmin etc). It will not be available for others to use. You will need a webhost (if you say what country you are in, I am sure that you will get recommendations from other OSCer's in your country). If english is not your first language, look for the OSC forum in your language. You will need an ftp program (like filezilla) to upload files to the webhost. You will need ssl. Once you have the basics, move on from there. Quote
