Kenix L Posted May 27, 2006 Posted May 27, 2006 Hi, my name is Kenix. I am totally "naive" with all programming language and web hosting issues. I am desperate and i need help badly for a step-by-step guide to install oscommerce. I read through the quick install guide but i don't really understand how to go about it. I have a domain name and x-cart installed by other people. I am opening my 2nd store and this time, i hope to use oscommerce as my shopping cart. Can anyone please guide me on this? As for my existing webstore, i will log in to c/panel to check my web stats. Is this the place to go to install oscommerce as well? Is this cPanel the control panel for hosting? If it is, which topic/area to go to to install oscommerce? Kindly please help and advise me....i am really desperate... Million thanks in advance...
chooch Posted May 27, 2006 Posted May 27, 2006 If you can't install it after reading the quick install guide then really oscommerce isn't for you as installing is different from modifying it and updating it. If you still want to give it a go and really can't understand how to install it from the quick install guide, you should use your cpanel fantastico and install oscommerce. Go from there one step at a time. If you don't know how to do it from cpanel, run a search engine query as that will show hunderds of thousands of pages of how to do it and failing that you can always ask your host to guide you or install it for you. Hope that helps. Upon receiving fixes and advice, too many people don't bother to post updates informing the forum of how it went. Until of course they need help again on other issues and they come running back! Why receive the information you require in good faith for free, only to then have the attitude to ignore the people who gave it to you? There's no harm in saying, 'Thanks, it worked'. On the contrary, it creates a better atmosphere. CHOOCH

To install oscommerce, we have to launch http://www.my-server.com/oscommerce/, can you please advise what to type in for "my-server"? I am sorry for this naive question. Is it our hosting company? Thanks

Kenix L Posted May 28, 2006 Author Posted May 28, 2006 it may be your website address? No, it is not my web address. I think it is the name of my hosting server. But i don't know how to locate the server name. Don't know if it is the name of my hosting company. But i tried and the page can't be displayed.
choosealogin Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Yes, it is your website address. For example: If you want to have your new oscommerce shop at www.redbananas.com, then you would need to register the domain name "redbananas.com" and get a hosting acct. for it. Then upload the oscommerce files to your site with FTP, at www.redbananas.com, like the instructions say. Then you need to create an empty database at your site, in the cpanel, at www.redbananas.com Then you can go to www.redbananas.com/catalog/install and install it, following the directions from there. Chooch is right, if you have fantastico on your cpanel, it takes 5 clicks to install osc. ...makes it really easy. No, it is not my web address. I think it is the name of my hosting server. plztalk2me Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I am having major difficulties getting the install to work and am intrigued with the above mentioned fantastico. what is it and how do i get it? Im a newbe as well. I have learnt so much in just a week of reading and playing with my oscommerce site. Things like making sure that your hosting provider have the right requirements like a PHP 4.1+ enabled web server may help. I still keep loosing my default page though, so I guess we can go on this new learning journey together. When you do get through this phase make sure you learn how to back up every time because if you dont you could loose alot of hard work!!! I havent mastered tracking my posts, If you dont hear back from me its because I couldnt find my original post not because Im ungrateful
