htaccess in Admin

Hey everyone!

This is my first setup and this is sweet! Thanks for all the great contributions. Hopefully I get to the point soon where I can contribute also.

In the meantime, I'm still a rank amateur, so here's a dumb question...

I want to password protect the Admin directory (obviously), so do I have to edit the existing .htaccess file that's already in there as opposed to adding one ?

And if so, where do I put my edit?

My htaccess info is:

AuthType Basic

AuthUserFile /home/content/a/b/c/abcde/html

AuthName "Administration Area"

require valid-user

And this is what's in the .htaccess file currently in catalog/admin ...

<IfModule mod_setenvif.c>

<IfDefine SSL>

SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" \

nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown \

downgrade-1.0 force-response-1.0

</IfDefine>

</IfModule>

# If Search Engine Friendly URLs do not work, try enabling the

# following Apache configuration parameter

#

# AcceptPathInfo On

# Fix certain PHP values

# (commented out by default to prevent errors occuring on certain

# servers)

#

#<IfModule mod_php4.c>

# php_value session.use_trans_sid 0

# php_value register_globals 1

#</IfModule>

Thanks! Please Help ...

Kickin' the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight ....

I am also new to OScommerce but my first installation has gone fine with only minor hiccups mostly due to my own 'skim reading' of the instructions.

I am very impressed with everything and am enjoying building my first shop with it. However I too am having difficulty understanding how to lock the admin areas with htaccess.

The knowledge base answer doesn't really give me any indication of what to do. There is also the mysterious line "For this to work, you must include the parameter 'Options' to the AllowOverride configuration"

Do I just uncomment certain lines? If so could anyone tell me which.

I have searched the forums and documentation but can't find anything. (Found loads of other really useful things though.) If (as I suspect) this question has been answered hundreds of time I apologise.

Thanks for any help you can give

Paul
