New to e-commerce

Hi guys,


I'm a supernoob in e-commerce. I have a set business plan and everything is slowly moving, but moving at the least.


My site is finally up so I am looking at the "Next Steps" and there are some terms I'm seeing for the first time.


I'm assuming

"Conversion Rate" means Number of Buyers divided by Number of Unique Hits.


In the few days I've been up, I seem to be getting about 40 - 50 unique hits per day (the counter on the bottom of the OSC page shows about 1800 now haha). So far, I have 2 registered users (aside from internal associates). I am being linked from our main website and from a few forums which I am a regular.


Are there any tips for marketing the site? We're trying to avoid too much local advertising (don't want the online store to take away from the B&M) so our main selling points are Free UPS Ground Shipping and Tax-Free purchases (for non-california addresses).

I think 1% is average is that right? I had a conversion rate of 1.8% for a short while until I started using adwords. The traffic from adwords sucks for me conversion wise.
