dacksal Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I know a lot of people are getting SSL from their host, and some are buying it, and having like a geotrust or verizon banner on their pages. They are both the same right? has anyone gotten SSL not verified when they go to their stores because they are using the hosts, and not the well known ones? I know customers can add it later if you tell them to. Do these things hurt the store's name. Do customers trust you if you dont use well known SSL like verizon and geotrust

SSL Certificates, in my humble opinion, are for the most part a farce! The only concern is that you don't trigger any browser windows. You can get a godaddy certificate for $20.00 a year, and a geotrust rapid Certificate for the same price. There is no difference from these, or the more expensive geotrust, or verisign products. So, unless you think that name recognition means something, and/or unless you like paying a whole lot for nothing. Buy a $20.00 a year certificate, and install it yourself! Most likely anyone who has a browser that won't recognize it won't be buying from you or anyone else anyways! Regards, Carlos

There is a difference between some certificates. There are actually three levels of them. Never go with the lowest level. The medium level, like godaddy's $20 one, is fine in most cases. The top level is meant for high volume sites. They provide more protection and more information on the certificate but, generally speaking, their cost is not justified on a typical oscommerce shop, in my opinion. Jack_mcs Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Just remember you get what you pay for ;)Not really in the case of certificates. There are only a few companies that actually genreate the certificates. These are sold to other companies, like godaddy, for resale. So many times you can pay $20 or $80 for the same certificate. If you jump up to a Verisign certificate for a few hundred dollars, it doesn't gain you much at all, unless there is a problem where the certificate doesn't work, and that is practically unheard of.
